A Note for MFS Experience Corps
EC is an intergenerational mentoring program aimed at helping students to meet the 3rd grade literacy benchmark, as well as bringing meaningful connections/opportunity to the older adults in our community. Many thanks to MFS EC Program Coordinators Nicole and Jessica!
Bob McKean, volunteer member of the Oregon Community Foundation's Metropolitan Portland Leadership Council, and a former MFS Board Chair presents MFS CEO Judy Strand with the OCF grant.
Funded through the OCF grant, and in partnership with North Clackamas School District, MFS will address the need for improving progress toward 3rd grade reading readiness among culturally diverse and/or English Language Learner children by providing early intervention for kindergarten - 3rd grade students through 1:1 academic mentoring. The project links two of MFS' culturally responsive programs - Ready, Set, Go (preparing students and parents for kindergarten) and Experience Corps (intergenerational mentoring.) Upon kindergarten entry, children will be matched with EC mentors who will follow mentees over 3 years.
Emily's MFS Story
The family’s only car had died months ago and getting it repaired wasn’t an option. Luckily, public transportation got her husband to work and her daughter was able to get a lift to school. But, the location of her new job was far away and not accessible by public transit. Buying a car seemed out of the question and Emily had given up hope that she’d be able to keep her new job and improve her family’s finances. With our guidance, she was able to secure a loan to purchase a reliable used car and maintain a better personal budgeting system. Emily was able to keep her new job--and have time to support their daughter’s interests.
