The partnership between Oregon Food Bank, Portland Children’s Levy and MFS was highlighted on KOIN Channel 6 and in the Gresham Outlook as making a difference in the community by combating food insecurity.
Many thanks to MFS Site Manager Celia Flaim (and team) and CEO Judy Strand for participating in / hosting this public relations opportunity highlighting the MFS Community School Food Pantry at Glenfair Elementary. Special thanks to Development Administrative Assistant Cyndi Rhoads for helping to drive press attendance – from East PDX news,Gresham Outlook, KOIN 6, KGW 8, FOX 12 – to this event.
Non-profit Metropolitan Family Service runs seven school-based food pantries in East County. It also operates 26 after-school meal sites, 23 summer meal sites and 12 school community gardens. MFS runs a variety of programs in greater Portland and southwest Washington to help families in poverty succeed at home, in school and in the community.
MFS’ Glenfair coordinator Celia Flaim said she and the school secretary are getting fewer calls for energy or rent assistance.
“The pantry enables them to use their money for other bills,” Flaim said. “It is often a case of ‘should I pay the electric bill or buy food.’”
