Hollydale Summer SUN Recap

From Sandra Jones, SUN Site Manager at Hollydale Elementary School 🌞

Here are some photos from our very first summer program! Even though we were not able to be at Hollydale for the summer, due to the bond construction, the location at Gresham United Methodist Church worked very well. In addition to servicing students from Hollydale, we also had students from West Gresham Elementary School.

Our classes included subjects like Science, Cooking, Arts & Crafts, Theater, Reading, Writing, Literacy, Phonics, Legos Robotics, Math, Sports, and Social Studies.

We had visits from the Hollydale principal, Debra James, as well as the Gresham-Barlow SD Superintendent, Dr. A. Katrise Perera. When the Gresham Fire Department came out for a visit, the students were able to see first-hand the firefighters preparing for an emergency – they unfortunately had to leave for a call in the middle of their presentation. (They did come back for a second visit though!!)

The students thoroughly enjoyed an interactive presentation from Mad Science! They were able to see and be involved in experiments with fire, ice and chemical reactions!

We were very lucky to have quite a few college interns from all over the country, as well as Nigeria, volunteer with the program.

On our last day of programming, we had a field day with a luau theme! Students made their own leis, jumped in a bouncy house… we had stations of bubble blowing, sidewalk chalk, face painting, obstacle course and sports!

We also were able to do the Backpack Buddies program, partnering with SnoCap. The students were able to get some food necessities to take home over the weekend, at the end of every week!

It was a great summer session, and we are ready for the fall!
