Volunteer Opportunities
with Older Adults
Senior Companion.
Senior Companion volunteers provide companionship-based services to
older adults and people with disabilities in Multnomah and
Washington Counties. These services are designed to keep clients
living independently in their homes for as long as possible and may
include help with clients’ personal care, involvement in social
activities, home management, and respite relief. Senior Companion is
a program for adults who are 60 and older who can commit to serving
at least 15 hours a week. A tax exempt stipend is available for
volunteers who are income eligible. You can view a

RSVP– volunteer with all ages.
RSVP volunteers share their expertise in rewarding jobs with people
of all ages in schools, hospitals, museums, the arts, the
environment, and other non-profit agencies throughout Multnomah
County. Volunteers are eligible to receive mileage reimbursement and
supplemental liability/accident insurance. The time commitment
varies according to site placement; however, volunteers contribute
an average of 16 hours of service each week and work both as
individuals and on team projects. You can view a

Drivers, provide a valuable
service to older adults and people with disabilities who do not have
transportation to and from grocery shopping, important medical and
personal appointments. Daytime drivers are urgently needed; however,

Bus and Van Driver. Project Linkage bus and van drivers use our
Project Linkage vehicles (minivan or 14 passenger bus) to drive
older adults to the grocery store, potluck lunches, medical
appointments, and general outings. We ask volunteers to be available
for three to four hour blocks of time, mornings or afternoons.
Friendly Visitor. Project Linkage friendly visitors make a
difference in the life of someone who is homebound and lacks family
support. Volunteers visit with clients in NE Portland on a one time
or ongoing basis and can sometimes assist with special requests or
errands. The time commitment is flexible and variable; most friendly
visitor volunteers visit every couple of weeks for a few hours.
Home Repair. Project Linkage volunteers help to keep an older
adults’ living environment safe and sanitary. Home maintenance
volunteers may be involved in weatherization, replacing light bulbs,
fixing steps and railings, or gutter cleaning. The time commitment
is flexible and variable; most volunteers contribute five to ten
hours a month, though more may be needed if volunteers are willing
and able!
Shopper or Escort. Project Linkage shoppers and escorts make
it possible for an older adult to remain independent in their own
home and receive adequate nutrition. Volunteers shop for or with
clients: shoppers can transport and assist clients, or shop for the
client using a list given to them; escorts accompany a Project
Linkage bus trip, and assist clients with their shopping. Time
commitment is typically once a week for two to four hours.
Telephone Reassurance Caller. Project Linkage telephone
reassurance volunteers help older adults or people with disabilities
who live alone and are isolated, feel safer and more secure by
maintaining daily (or near daily) contact with the client.
Volunteers typically make calls five days a week, lasting 10 to 15
minutes a call.
