After returning from a camping trip with 11 Davis SUN
students, I was waiting with children for parents to arrive.
I asked the kids to raise their hands if they had never
slept in a tent before, and most raised their hands. I asked the kids to raise
their hands if they had never cooked on a camp stove before, and all raised
their hands. I asked the kids to raise their hands if they had never had S’Mores
before, and as most of the children were raising their hands, one boy dropped
his hand on the table, looked at me and said, "Ms. Kelly, I hadn’t done any of
that stuff we did before!”
It was such a great revelation to me of how the SUN program
is able to take these children places they have never been and never dreamed of
going. |
