Overview

High poverty rates, lack of education, language, and culture all play a role in creating barriers to wellness.

One in five families in Oregon live in poverty. Metropolitan Family Service invests in individuals that struggle with many of the issues associated with cultural and economic disparities – including obesity, poor nutrition, and diabetes.

MFS Health Goals

  • Reduce barriers to accessing health care
  • Increase awareness of nutritional food choices and healthy cooking
  • Improve good fitness habits
  • Increase food shopping expertise and budgeting
MFS Health Services
  • One-on-one assistance and group support to access healthcare needs provided by Community Health Workers
  • Cooking classes to build skills for economic shopping and food preparation
  • Workshops to provide information to save money, make healthy food choices, and access emergency food resources
  • Walking and Fitness Groups to promote family fitness with help from fitness professionals

Metropolitan Family Service provides some health services in Spanish.

Your Involvement
Metropolitan Family Service engages the energy, resources, and time of many community partners and volunteers to provide health services in the Greater Portland region.

Our community partners include nonprofit providers, businesses, schools, health care organizations, and funders. With these collaborations, MFS provides health services to more than 2,200 individuals each year.

Metropolitan Family Service volunteers include business leaders, parents, students, neighbors, families, and our own MFS health participants.

The success of our health services and the individuals who participate in these services are directly related to the support we receive from our partners, volunteers, and the community.

For more information about how to volunteer, please contact us at info@metfamily.org

Ana Luz Genchi Ramirez and her family came to Portland several years ago. Like many new refugees, she did not speak English and faced many barriers in health and employment.

Last year Ana Luz's doctor provided her a referral to MFS HEALTH. Ana Luz was hesitant about giving birth without an interpreter. Matilde, an MFS health worker, linked her to a doula (birthing coach) who spoke Spanish and with whom she was able to build a trusting relationship.

After the birth Ana Luz received help from MFS health workers so she could acquire baby items and enroll the new baby in the Oregon Health Plan.
